The Brick Kilns1954 This is a very unusual Kahlo "landscape" painting. If she didn't admit to painting it I would never guess that it was a Kahlo painting. It was painted in early 1954 while she was confined to her bed recovering from the amputation of her right leg. While recovering , Frida's surgeon, Dr Farill, took her for a drive in the countryside. They passed a group of brick kilns and something about the bleak archaic beauty of these round ovens caught her attention .perhaps they were a symbol of the crematorium oven that would one day soon consume her own body. Dr Farill suggested that she make a sketch on the spot but Frida said that she did not need to, she would carry the sketch in her head. "The Brick Kilns" show a group of kilns with a man in a sombrero sitting and stoking one of the ovens with a long stick. This painting, as well as others painted in the last days of her life, lacks the quality and detail for which Frida was known. She said she never finished the painting. She put it aside to continue work on another commissioned piece, "Self Portrait in a Landscape with Sun Going Down", which she later destroyed. The whereabouts of this painting was unknown until it was recently discovered in a storage room in the Blue House. |
